While volunteering allows you to help decide where helping would be best for you and may not require you to interact in ways you won't be comfortable or able to, certain parts of the shelter and volunteering are inevitable.
In general, at the shelter, you will likely be: exposed to strong animal odors and harsh sounds of varying length and intensity.
Depending on how you volunteer, you may encounter situations that require you to: lift heavy objects, sit, stand, or kneel for long periods of time, be potentially exposed to zoonotic disease and animals of unknown health or behavior, be exposed to varying weather conditions, encounters with people in stressful, uncomfortable, or embarrassing situations that may lash out at strangers, volunteers, or staff members.
Please know that HSNBA will do everything it can to mitigate your danger and help you; we want you to enjoy your time volunteering and maximize your ability to help the homeless animals of our community.

- Orientation is mandatory for all family members interested in volunteering.
- Volunteers must be at least 10 years of age and accompanied by an adult at all times while volunteering at the shelter. (Exceptions MAY be made at the discretion of the Volunteer Coordinator or the Director.)
- Volunteers aged 15-17 must have a legal guardian attend an orientation with them and afterward can volunteer on their own.
- There must be a one to one ration of adults to children under 15 years of age at all times while volunteering. (Exceptions MAY be made at the discretion of the Volunteer Coordinator or the Director.)
- After orientation, participants who choose to sign the Volunteer Guidelines and join the HSNBA Paw Project will be asked to make a donation of $25 per volunteer to cover the cost of their volunteer T-shirt and volunteer program administration costs.
- Volunteers will treat all visitors to HSNBA with respect, kindness, and understanding at all times
- Volunteers will treat each other, HSNBA Staff and Board Members, and County and City Animal Control Officers with respect, kindness, and understanding at all times. Sexual harassment or violence will result in an immediate dismissal from the program and after being asked to leave, offenders will no longer be allowed on the premises.
- Volunteers are expected to volunteer at least once every 90 days, or they will be marked inactive. To resume volunteering, you must contact the volunteer coordinator to be reinstated at their discretion, which may include going through orientation or other classes to be caught up on changes at the shelter.
- Volunteers understand that some dogs and cats have been known at times to bite, scratch, or claw due to their stressful environment, and volunteers will USE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS WHEN HANDLING ANIMALS. Volunteers assume all risks and liability involved.
- In order to protect the public, staff, volunteers, and the animals, volunteers will report any signs of animal aggression or illness to a staff member immediately. Any bite from an animal must be reported to staff immediately and failure to do so will result in immediate dismissal of the volunteer.
- The HSNBA holds contracts with the Comal County, New Braunfels, and Marion Animal Control Divisions and therefore must at all times have space available to receive animals from these entities. Therefore, there are unfortunate instances when some animals have to be euthanized. HSNBA only euthanizes animals who have veterinary needs that cannot be met by the resources available or whose temperament poses a threat of injury to people or other animals. Volunteers are never asked to be a part of this process but it is important they can accept staff decisions concerning euthanasia when it is necessary.
- I am waiving any and all possible claims known or unknown, now or in the future, which I or any of my heirs, successors, legates, guardians, distributees, representatives, assignees, executors, administrators, and/or any person or entity claiming by through, or under me may have now, or at any time in the future against NEW BRAUNFELS HUMANE SOCIETY, their heirs, successors, legatees, guardians, distributees, representatives, agents, assignees, executors, administrators, and/or any person or entity, associated with, in any capacity, including but not limited to the Board of Directors of the New Braunfels Humane Society.
- Volunteers not adhering to the established Volunteer Guidelines will be asked to cease volunteering at HSNBA
